Tyler Christensen is a student at MIT whose presence is certain to light up the room. That'd be because of his hat, which happens to have a functioning Tesla coil mounted on top of it.
Christensen built the sparking head decor to serve as part of his Halloween costume this year. The hat features a working sound system in addition to the coil, which emits brilliant blue arcs of electricity in time with the music ? in this case, the Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter movie themes, as you can hear for yourself in the video.
Calling the device "a really bad idea" on his blog, Christensen says he intends to improve it, but only after finishing up his coursework. If he's not one of the brightest students in his class, it'll come as quite a shock. Those interested in making their own questionably safe lightning hat can do so thanks to the schematics Christensen was kind enough to post on his blog.
