Iraqi police: Bombs kill 7 near Baghdad (AP)

BAGHDAD, ? Iraqi officials say seven people have been killed in two blasts in central Iraq.

Police officials said two bombs were planted early Saturday in a spot where day laborers gather in the mostly Sunni village of al-Zaidan, near the town of Abu Ghraib west of Baghdad.

The officials say the bombs, which exploded minutes apart, wounded 11 other laborers.

A health official at Abu Ghraib general hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release the information.

Violence has ebbed across Iraq, but deadly bombings and shootings still occur almost daily as U.S. troops prepare to leave by the end of the year.

Medicine
Treatment of lung cancer

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Taiwan, according to the Department of health (DOH), having been awarded to 28% of deaths in 2009. Lung cancer is the most common because it represents a fifth of the cases before, in descending order, of liver cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, stomach cancer, cancer of the mouth, cancer of the prostate, cancer of the esophagus, the cancer of the pancreas and cancer of the cervix [1].

AT&T Takes Two Steps Back With Hopes To Inch Closer To T-Mo Deal

attmo1Well, this isn't the strategy I was expecting, but it seems the FCC's request to investigate the AT&T/T-Mobile deal under the lens of an administrative law judge last week just doesnt sit well with AT&T. Rather than be scrutinized, the company has instead withdrawn its application for the merger. But don't let that confuse you. Buying Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile is still big blue's end goal — the FCC just happens to be blocking the road at the moment.

Justin Bieber discusses paternity accusation with Letterman (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? David Letterman told Justin Bieber he could "smell a weasel" when the pop star was accused of fathering a fan's baby.

In a preview of The Biebs' appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" Wednesday night, Letterman describes his anger at Mariah Yeater's paternity claim.

Letterman may be unusually sensitive to the possibility of people trying to extort money from celebrities: In 2009, he admitted to having sex with women who work for him on the "Late Show" after one of their boyfriends tried to blackmail him.

"You know what? That made me see red," Letterman told Bieber about Yeater's claim of a backstage tryst with Bieber after a Los Angeles concert.

"Really? You saw red? You were angry? Why were you angry?" a smiling Bieber asked Letterman.

"I could smell a weasel," said Letterman.

"I think I can smell a weasel, too, a little bit," Bieber said. "I know, it's pretty crazy ... people make up false accusations."

You can watch a preview, in which Bieber also describes taking a DNA test, and is confused by the word "disrobing," here: http://www.thewrap.com/tv/column-post/justin-bieber-letterman-i-smelled-weasel-baby-mama-drama-video-33025

Nokia promises software updates to fix Lumia 800 battery woes

We experienced occasional battery and charging problems when reviewing the Lumia 800, and it looks like others have had issues too. In fact, it's become a sufficiently (un)popular topic on Nokia's support forums to encourage the company to post up a reply, confirming that two software fixes are in the works. The first will target power efficiency and arrive in early December, while the second will follow in January and hopefully improve charging. Only a minority of users are affected, we're told, so it's lucky for them that they're vocal.

Nokia promises software updates to fix Lumia 800 battery woes originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Nov 2011 10:45:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Five great games to play with the whole family

Sony/Insomniac Games

The family that games together, stays together. This holiday, Ratchet & Clank and crew can help show you how.

By Winda Benedetti

It's official. The holidays are upon us. And you know what that means: In the coming weeks you and your kinfolk will have ample time to sit cooped up together in one house for way too long.

It?s during these desperate times that you will search for something to keep the people related to you amused (and from strangling each other). And in these moments, a video game can be the perfect rescue.

Much like the board and card games of yore, video games can be a great way to pass the time with the entire family. They can offer everyone a chance to connect, a chance to laugh and, most importantly, a chance to totally crush one another in bit of friendly competition.

The members of your extended family don't play games, you say? Pshaw! They simply need a gentle and amusing introduction. Here are five video games to play with the whole fam damily.

Microsoft

1. Kinect Sports: Season Two ? Xbox 360 (Kinect required) $50
Here's a good way to burn off all the calories from the turkey or figgy pudding that you and your fam just packed away ... and all without actually having to brave the freezing weather outside.

With this follow-up to last year's "Kinect Sports" game, Microsoft delivers another solid package of sporty mini-games that the whole gang can jump into using the motion-and-voice-sensing powers of Kinect.

This time around you'll play mini-games based around the real-world sports of golf, darts, tennis, baseball, skiing and football. With Kinect watching your every move, you'll pantomime the actions you'd really use when playing these games ? swing your arms to swing a bat in the baseball game, lean side-to-side to ski your way down a digital snow hill, etc.

It's nothing but good fun for everyone ... and you might even break a sweat.

Extra! Extra! Sports mini-games for the family have been a staple of motion-controlled gaming for years now. If you don't have an Xbox 360, grab "Wii Sports Resort" for the Wii or "Sports Champions" for the PlayStation 3. Since both games are a year or more old, you'll find them at some nicely discounted prices.

Harmonix

2. Dance Central 2?? Xbox 360 (Kinect required) $50
You know what they say: The family that dances together stays together. That, or maybe it's the family that laughs together stays together. I dunno, but either way, both apply when it comes to this game.

The great thing about "Dance Central 2" is that you can have two left feet and still enjoy this game in which you pit your dance skills (or lack thereof) against those of friends and family. Like the original "Dance Central," this sequel uses the Kinect motion controller to read the movements of your entire body as you try to follow choreographed dance routines performed by a colorful array of characters on the screen.

You'll perform some sweet moves with names like "Say What," "Hot Feet" and "Mad Dash" to songs from Daft Punk, Lady Gaga, Sir Mix-A-Lot and yes ... even Justin Bieber. And, believe it or not, you may actually improve your dance skillz along the way.

The game's developer has made numerous improvements to this sequel ? the most important one being that two players can dance at the same time. Also, the game now features a beefed-up "break it down" mode for teaching players?each move. You can now select specific dance moves to work on, view each move in slow motion, and even record yourself dancing and see how you do compared to your on-screen instructor.

Leave your ego at the door, toss back some eggnog (spiked for the grown-ups) and put this game into your Xbox 360. The whole family will soon be doing the "Board Walk" and the "Beauty Step" ... and having a blast the entire time.

Extra! Extra! If dance games are up your family's alley but you don't own an Xbox, check out "Everybody Dance" for the PlayStation 3 and "Just Dance 3" for the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Magic Pixel Games

3. Carnival Island?? PlayStation 3 (Move controls required) $40
If the members of your family aren't big video game players?? or if they're simply not the dancing kind ? then try easing them into things with this collection of motion-controlled, carnival-themed mini-games.

Everyone's been to a circus or a fair, and this PS3 game simply brings the midway to your living room. Using Sony's Move motion controls, you can compete against each other at games based on familiar real-world midway games such as skee-ball, ring toss and?basketball shoot. Up to four people can play "Carnival Island" at one time and it features more than 35 games and attractions in total.

Yes, seasoned gamers will note that this is not the deepest or most impressive video game you'll find out there. But it does a really great job showing off the accuracy of Sony's Move controls and it's an easy one for everyone from junior to Gramps to jump right into.

Extra! Extra! If motion-controlled mini-games are up your family's alley but you don't own a PS3, consider the similarly carnival-themed "Carnival Games: Monkey See, Monkey Do!"??for the Xbox 360 or "Wii Play: Motion" for the Wii.?

Hasbro/EA

4. "Family Game Night 4: The Game Show"?? Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii, $40
Speaking of easing your family members into the world of video gaming with something familiar, "Family Game Night 4: The Game Show" takes traditional gaming, crosses it with motion-controlled video gaming and tosses in some easy-to-pickup game show action to boot.

Here traditional games like Connect 4, Yahtzee and Scrabble are given the motion-control twist. For example, Connect 4 becomes a motion-controlled basketball game in which you must toss your colored-pieces into vertical and horizontal lines of four as fast as you can, trying to beat your opponent both with throwing accuracy and strategy.

Again, this is the kind of video?gaming that shouldn't seem too intimidating to the non-gamers joining you for the holiday.

Insomniac Games

5. "Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One"?? PlayStation 3, $60
If your extended family does have some game experience ? enough to handle your basic game controller ? then "Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One" is the perfect game for some quality holiday bonding.

Games starring Ratchet, the big-eared Lombax, and Clank, the tiny robot, have been PlayStation staples for years, but this is the first R&C title to include cooperative multiplayer gameplay. That means up to four players can jump in at one time and work together as they take these colorful characters on yet another sci-fi adventure.

Young kids will love the bright world and the zany sense of humor, casual players will love having friends in the game to help them out and more seasoned players will love the high quality of the platforming and puzzle-solving found here.

As Galactic President Qwark says in the game, "We must set aside our petty squabbles and act as a singular unit!" If that doesn't sound like family bonding ... I don't know what does.

Extra, extra! If this kind of mad-cap, four-player adventure is up your fam's alley, then other good options include "Disney Universe" (for the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3) and "Kirby's Return to Dream Land" for the Wii.

More tourists head to Caribbean but spend less

(AP) ? It's a good news-bad news deal for tourism in the sun-soaked Caribbean. Visits are surging but revenues are not keeping pace.

Analysts attribute the rising number of visitors to more cruise ships and flights to the region, and people taking trips they had postponed because of the economic crisis. But when they get to their destination, Caribbean officials say, tourists are spending less.

"The bodies are traveling, obviously, but the spending is clearly impacted," said Josef Forstmayr, president of the Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Organization. "The larger destinations have it a little easier. They have more resources, they get better airlift, they have better products."

Caribbean countries such as the Bahamas, St. Lucia and the Dominican Republic announced a record number of visitors last year. Caribbean tourism officials hope to surpass the more than 23 million visitors reported last year this winter season.

Registration for the Caribbean Marketplace, the region's largest marketing event that will be held in the Bahamas in late January and aims to create vacation packages, is up by nearly 50 percent compared with last year, Forstmayr said.

"We expect a strong winter," he said. "Overall bookings from all the islands are up from last year."

New routes announced by the airline JetBlue from Puerto Rico to St. Thomas and to St. Maarten also could bring additional visitors, said Gilda Gumbs-Samuel, executive director of the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association.

Anguilla, a speck of an island in the eastern Caribbean, saw a record double-digit increase in tourists last year.

The cruise ship industry also promises to draw in thousands of tourists this winter, said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor in chief of CruiseCritic.com.

Last winter, cruise lines withdrew their ships from the Caribbean and placed them in the Mediterranean, hoping to attract a wealthy European market.

"That was a radical experiment, and it failed," Spencer Brown said. "So the ships are back in the Caribbean this year."

Puerto Rico, a cruise-ship hub, anticipates a 20 percent increase in visits, bolstered by the new arrival of the Celebrity Silhouette line that is expected to generate $3.6 million in revenue during the winter season, said Jose Perez-Riera, the U.S. territory's Commerce and Economic Development Secretary.

But industry officials say the rising number of visitors is not converting into increased revenue.

Spencer Brown noted that tourists are demanding cheaper prices and scrutinizing deals before buying anything.

"People are very quirky these days about value for money," she said. "They'll splurge for it, but it better be worth it."

Constance Knoll, 64, of St. Louis, Missouri, said she and her husband saved up for an upcoming Caribbean cruise, paying less than $3,000 for the weeklong trip in December.

But unlike many other tourists this winter, they agreed to not set a budget during the trip.

"When it's vacation, you don't have to think that way," she said. "If you want it, you can have it. Life is short. And we're in our 60s now, so life is even shorter."

The economic crisis forced people to postpone their vacations for a few years, and while demand for travel has risen, tourists will not be able to afford much, said Evridiki Tsounta, an economist with the International Monetary Fund.

Spending is tight amid the ongoing economic crisis, and tourists are cutting back on transportation, food and entertainment, said Winfield Griffith, research director for the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Visitors, especially repeat ones, are increasingly choosing to board public buses instead of hailing taxis to visit popular attractions, and they are buying food and liquor at supermarkets instead of eating out, he said.

They also are booking outings through small, local operators instead of relying on hotels or buying pricey packages, Griffith said.

They know the drill," he said. "In Barbados, for instance, you can pay $2 by public transport to go anywhere in the country. To go around the country by taxi would probably run you in the neighborhood of $150. That's a massive difference."

Last year, tourists across the Caribbean spent $22.3 billion, compared with a record $27 billion spent in 2007, said Sean Smith, statistics specialist with the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The biggest drop in expenditures in the last decade was reported in 2002, with $18.9 billion spent, he said.

The IMF has encouraged the Caribbean to diversify and seek other tourism markets, especially in Latin America, where the economy has been rebounding, Tsounta said in a phone interview.

"Given that both the U.S. and the U.K. are not faring very well, and the outlook is not very rosy moving forward, it will be hard for things to revert quickly," she said.

Slightly more people seek unemployment benefits (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The number of people seeking unemployment benefits ticked up slightly last week after two months of steady declines.

But the increase isn't enough to reverse the downward trend. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, fell to its lowest level since April. The decline in the average signals that companies are laying off fewer workers.

Weekly applications for unemployment aid rose 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 393,000, the Labor Department said Wednesday. It's only the second increase in six weeks. The four-week average fell to 394,250. That's the eighth drop in the past nine weeks.

"We've been on a downward trend since September, so that's a good sign," said Ryan Wang, an economist at HSBC Securities.

Even so, weekly applications would need to stay below 375,000 consistently to push down the unemployment rate significantly. They haven't been at that level since February.

The steady decline in applications suggests that hiring may pick up this month compared with October, when employers added only 80,000 jobs. That was the fewest in four months.

Still, the government said earlier this month that employers added more jobs in August and September than it had initially reported. And the unemployment rate dipped to 9 percent.

The number of people receiving benefits rose for only the second time in five weeks to 3.7 million. But that figure doesn't include several million more people who are receiving extended benefits under an emergency program put in place during the recession.

All told, 6.7 million people received unemployment aid during the week of Nov. 5, the latest data available.

The economy is growing but not fast enough to generate many jobs. The economy expanded at a 2 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter, the government estimated Tuesday. That was down from an earlier estimate of 2.5 percent.

Growth would need to be more than twice that pace to significantly reduce unemployment, economists say.

The lower estimate was due mostly to companies sharply reducing their stockpiles of goods. They probably didn't anticipate that consumer and business spending would remain strong through the summer.

A decline in inventories is not always a bad sign. Economists believe this could lead to better growth in the current quarter, if businesses anticipate more demand and restock their shelves.

Economists predict growth will strengthen to around 3 percent in the October-December quarter. Many raised their estimates after seeing encouraging October reports on retail sales and factory output.

Still, that brighter outlook hinges on whether Europe can prevent its financial crisis from getting worse. If not, Europe could fall into a recession, which could slow U.S. growth next year.

In the first six months of the year, the economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.9 percent. It was the weakest growth since the recession officially ended, which stocked fears over the summer that the economy could be on the verge of another downturn.

The stronger growth in the July-September quarter helped calm those worries. Still, Americans spent more while earning less, and they dipped into their savings to make up the difference. At the same time, businesses invested more in machines and computers, not workers.

Without more jobs and higher pay raises, consumers are unlikely to be able to sustain those gains.

Dr. Dre Deserves A Break, Slim The Mobster Says

'He gave us Eminem and 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Game ... let the man have fun,' War Music rapper tells 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Dr. Dre made waves last week when he said he was ready to take "a little bit of a break" from music after he finishes working with Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster.

When Slim appeared on "RapFix Live" Wednesday, the Aftermath rapper said, "For the past time that I've been around, I know for a fact that [Dre] hasn't been out the studio long. Let him have a break.

"He gave us Eminem and 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Game, he gave us so many different things in his time. There are some rappers who haven't gave us nothing. So, let the man have fun now."

At the opening of the Beats by Dre pop-up store in Manhattan, New York, the hip-hop icon told Fader TV, "I've been working on music for 27 years now, and the longest I've ever been out of the studio in 27 years has been two weeks. I'm never gonna stop music — it's like air to me. I'm gonna take a little bit of a break, enjoy some time with the family."

But can we at least get Detox before he goes? "I'm hoping," said Slim, who recently released his War Music mixtape. "That's what we're shooting for, right?"

Several years in the making, there hasn't been a hip-hop album shrouded in as much mystery as Dre's third solo affair. Even Slim, who is in the Doc's camp, isn't sure which songs will make the final track list, though he has heard several, including a song with Jay-Z and another with Drake.

"It's a process, so I don't even know what songs are really on the album and what songs aren't on the album," Slim said, before noting that, ultimately, Dre isn't too concerned with high-profile features. "He's picky; he don't care about that name stuff. It's gotta be appeasing to him and what he likes."

Were you surprised by Dr. Dre's announcement? Sound off below!

S. Korean lawmaker fires tear gas in parliament

Yonhap News Television via EPA

Representative Kim Seon-dong of South Korea's opposition Democratic Labor Party explodes a tear gas canister in front of the speaker's chair to block the National Assembly's Vice Speaker Chung Eui-hwa from pushing for the procedure to handle a pending bill on ratification of a Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (FTA) on November 22, in Seoul, South Korea.

Lawmaker Kim Seon-dong, center, struggles with security guards after he detonated the tear gas canister.

The AP reports from SEOUL, South Korea:

South Korea's parliament ratified a long-stalled free trade deal with the United States on Tuesday after ruling party lawmakers forced a vote amid shouts and shoves from opposition rivals.

Kim Seon-dong (out of frame) explodes a tear gas canister in front of the speaker's chair to block ratification of the agreement.

South Korean lawmakers voted 151 to 7 in favor of ratifying the landmark trade agreement in a surprise legislative session called by the ruling Grand National Party, parliamentary officials said.

Shouts filled the National Assembly as lawmakers pushed, shoved and screamed while ruling party lawmakers forced their way onto the parliamentary floor. One opposition lawmaker fired tear gas, reports said. Some lawmakers were seen wiping their eyes after being doused with the chemical.

Security guards later manhandled that opposition lawmaker out of the chamber as he shouted and tried to resist being thrown out. Opposition members also scuffled with police outside the National Assembly building as they tried to get inside to block the deal's passage.

The pact is America's biggest free-trade agreement since the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico. Two-way trade between South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy, and the United States totaled about $90 billion last year, according to the South Korean government.

Lawmakers have been wrangling over ratification of the free trade deal since U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama approved the deal last month after years of divisive debate in the U.S. Continue reading.

Good Reads: Karzai's loya jirga, Occupy Wall Street protests, and Putin's peace prize

At a traditional loya jirga meeting of elders, Afghan President Hamid Karzai makes the case for continued partnership with US, while a New York judge orders city officials to shut down Occupy Wall Street's tent city.

As horrible as they are, wars are the milestones of life. Historians spend lifetimes puzzling how we humans get into them, and political scientists create elaborate theories on how we can get out of them.

In Afghanistan, with the US drawdown of military forces underway, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called an extraordinary meeting of village and tribal elders called a ?loya jirga,? to chart the path forward for that rugged, mountainous, but utterly charming country.

The biggest issue, writes Alissa J. Rubin in The New York Times, is just what kind of relationship Afghanistan should have with its erstwhile protector, the United States. In many villages, US troops have long ago worn out their welcome, and Mr. Karzai?s government has openly suggested peace talks with the Taliban.

But at the loya jirga, Karzai told elders that the US could still have a role to play in rebuilding Afghanistan, although it would be a role dictated by the Afghan people?s own national interests.

?It?s O.K. that they are strong and rich and powerful, but we are lions. Weak and old and sick, a lion is still a lion, in the forest everyone avoids a lion even if it is old and sick and weak. A lion doesn?t like it if a stranger comes to his house, he doesn?t want his children taken by foreigners during the night, the lion doesn?t want parallel government structures. ?

Nice words, but here?s the irony. The loya jirga itself is kind of parallel government, unelected by the people, selected and invited by Karzai, which potentially undermines the authority of Afghanistan?s duly elected legislative institution, the parliament. Afghanistan has had loya jirgas longer than it has had parliamentary democracy, of course, and there is no indication that Karzai is deliberately making an end run around his critics in the Afghan Parliament.

But Scott Worden, a senior rule of law adviser at the US Institute of Peace, writes in Foreign Policy?why this particular gathering is one to watch, and watch carefully:

Given that the "Traditional Loya Jirga" lacks formal requirements to assume constitutional powers, its main authority is political. Therefore, its success will depend on whether President Karzai has chosen members that truly represent diverse constituencies and limit themselves to political outcomes. If instead the delegates are seen as exclusive of key interest groups and attempt to make legally binding decisions that could not be approved otherwise, this Loya Jirga will represent a significant setback for Afghan democracy and could foment greater conflict, rather than pushing forward the priority of peace.

Light created from a vacuum: Casimir effect observed in superconducting circuit

ScienceDaily (Nov. 18, 2011) ? Scientists at Chalmers have succeeded in creating light from vacuum -- observing an effect first predicted over 40 years ago. In an innovative experiment, the scientists have managed to capture some of the photons that are constantly appearing and disappearing in the vacuum.

The results have been published in the journal Nature.

The experiment is based on one of the most counterintuitive, yet, one of the most important principles in quantum mechanics: that vacuum is by no means empty nothingness. In fact, the vacuum is full of various particles that are continuously fluctuating in and out of existence. They appear, exist for a brief moment and then disappear again. Since their existence is so fleeting, they are usually referred to as virtual particles.

Chalmers scientist, Christopher Wilson and his co-workers have succeeded in getting photons to leave their virtual state and become real photons, i.e. measurable light. The physicist Moore predicted way back in 1970 that this should happen if the virtual photons are allowed to bounce off a mirror that is moving at a speed that is almost as high as the speed of light. The phenomenon, known as the dynamical Casimir effect, has now been observed for the first time in a brilliant experiment conducted by the Chalmers scientists.

"Since it's not possible to get a mirror to move fast enough, we've developed another method for achieving the same effect," explains Per Delsing, Professor of Experimental Physics at Chalmers. "Instead of varying the physical distance to a mirror, we've varied the electrical distance to an electrical short circuit that acts as a mirror for microwaves."

The "mirror" consists of a quantum electronic component referred to as a SQUID (Superconducting quantum interference device), which is extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. By changing the direction of the magnetic field several billions of times a second the scientists were able to make the "mirror" vibrate at a speed of up to 25 percent of the speed of light.

"The result was that photons appeared in pairs from the vacuum, which we were able to measure in the form of microwave radiation," says Per Delsing. "We were also able to establish that the radiation had precisely the same properties that quantum theory says it should have when photons appear in pairs in this way."

What happens during the experiment is that the "mirror" transfers some of its kinetic energy to virtual photons, which helps them to materialise. According to quantum mechanics, there are many different types of virtual particles in vacuum, as mentioned earlier. G?ran Johansson, Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics, explains that the reason why photons appear in the experiment is that they lack mass.

"Relatively little energy is therefore required in order to excite them out of their virtual state. In principle, one could also create other particles from vacuum, such as electrons or protons, but that would require a lot more energy."

The scientists find the photons that appear in pairs in the experiment interesting to study in closer detail. They can perhaps be of use in the research field of quantum information, which includes the development of quantum computers.

However, the main value of the experiment is that it increases our understanding of basic physical concepts, such as vacuum fluctuations -- the constant appearance and disappearance of virtual particles in vacuum. It is believed that vacuum fluctuations may have a connection with "dark energy" which drives the accelerated expansion of the universe. The discovery of this acceleration was recognised this year with the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Where to Watch the Leonid Meteor Shower Near La Grande, Oregon (ContributorNetwork)

The 2010 Leonid Meteor Shower is set to peak Nov. 17 and 18. Eastern Oregon is a fantastic place to view meteors because there are almost no larger cities. In the La Grande vicinity, quite a few spots are available to catch the Leonids. Drive just a little way from town, and you will find yourself in an area outside of the city glow. Dress warmly, bring some hot chocolate or cider, and prepare yourself for the show.

Mt. Emily

From downtown La Grande, plan on 30 to 45 minutes to drive to Mt. Emily, a scenic viewpoint of the Grande Ronde Valley. These are country roads, and it will be dark when you head out to Mt. Emily, so be on the lookout for animals on the road. This is a great spot to check out the Leonid Meteor Shower because you will certainly avoid traffic and city lights. The meteors will stand out in brilliant beauty against the night sky. Find a map and directions to Mt. Emily here.

Morgan Lake

I love Morgan Lake any time of the year, but why not try it out to watch the Leonids? The drive up to, and the area around, the lake is heavily treed. However, right at Morgan Lake has open area. I can't think of a more romantic place to catch the meteors with your sweetie than the lake. Quite a few people live on Morgan Lake Road, but the homes are well-spaced, so their lights should not affect viewing. I definitely recommend four-wheel drive or excellent winter traction. Although snow hasn't reached the valley floor yet, the Morgan Lake Road can be sketchy even in summer. Plan on 30 minutes from downtown La Grande, depending on road conditions. A map and directions are located here.

Mt. Fanny

Mt. Fanny is located near Cove, Oregon. This makes it about 20 miles outside of La Grande. Drive time will be about 30 to 45 minutes. Mt. Fanny is one of the highest peaks surrounding the Grande Ronde Valley. Cove is a very small town, so it casts little glow. There should be minimal distractions for your viewing of the Leonid Meteor Shower. Map and directions located here.

Tesla coil hat makes a shocking fashion statement (Yahoo! News)

Tyler Christensen is a student at MIT whose presence is certain to light up the room. That'd be because of his hat, which happens to have a functioning Tesla coil mounted on top of it.

Christensen built the sparking head decor to serve as part of his Halloween costume this year. The hat features a working sound system in addition to the coil, which emits brilliant blue arcs of electricity in time with the music ? in this case, the Mortal Kombat and Harry Potter movie themes, as you can hear for yourself in the video.

Calling the device "a really bad idea" on his blog, Christensen says he intends to improve it, but only after finishing up his coursework. If he's not one of the brightest students in his class, it'll come as quite a shock. Those interested in making their own questionably safe lightning hat can do so thanks to the schematics Christensen was kind enough to post on his blog.

Justin Bieber Paternity Suit Dropped?

Reports indicate Mariah Yeater has dropped her paternity claim.
By Gil Kaufman

Justin Bieber won't have to take a paternity test after all. Less than two weeks after a California woman claimed that the "Baby" singer had fathered a child with her last year following a brief backstage tryst, TMZ is reporting that lawyers for accuser Mariah Yeater quietly dropped the suit last week.

In fact, the gossip site is adding that not only has the paternity case been withdrawn, but lawyers Lance Rogers and Matt Pare have quit representing Yeater entirely.

Bieber's camp had vigorously denied the claim from the moment Yeater launched the paternity action earlier this month. Yeater claimed in a signed affidavit in the suit that she had unprotected sex with Bieber last October in a backstage area at one of the singer's concerts at Los Angeles' Staples Center and that her four-month-old baby is his.

Fighting Back: What Are Justin's Legal Options Now?

Last week, Bieber's camp confirmed that the 17-year-old singer would take a paternity test as soon as he returns from a European promotional jaunt in celebration of his just-released Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe.

"I can confirm that the team has proactively made arrangements for Justin to be tested upon his return and we're going to hold everyone who is involved responsible," Bieber spokesperson Matthew Hiltzik said in a statement. "It's sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims," Hiltzik added. "We'll vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to protect Justin and to hold those involved with bringing this suit accountable for their actions." It is unclear if Bieber's camp will still pursue a lawsuit over the bogus claims.

Hiltzik could not be reached for confirmation at press time; MTV News also could not reach Yeater's lawyers at press time.

Facebook investigates gore and porn

Facebook

By Helen A.S. Popkin

"I saw two this evening," one Facebook user wrote us last night, in an email that contained two screenshots from her Newsfeed. "The porn, to each their own ... but the dog and the blood just turned my stomach ... disgusting."

She's not alone. In the past two days, Facebook users have become increasingly vocal about graphic photos ? pornography and mutilated corpses of humans and animals ??showing up on Facebook Newsfeeds. Facebook users forwarded several screen shots to Technolog, which we forwarded to the social network, but won't publish at this time.

Facebook did not specifically address the images but they did provide this official statement:?

Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms. We have recently experienced an increase in reports and we are investigating and addressing the issue.

Facebook users are encouraged to report abusive content via the dropdown menu that appears next to each post on profile walls and Newsfeed.

It's not clear how widespread the gore and porn posts are throughout the site. In our anecdotal survey, Technolog heard more from users who said they'd only been told about the images from friends who saw such posts, along with the few who?who sent us screenshots.?

It's also unclear whether the graphic images are?being spread via a clickjacking scam. Clickjacking scams are unfortunately common on Facebook and spread when?a Facebook user clicks on a malicious?link on the social network. The click allows code to access the user's account, which then spams?malicious links to that user's Facebook friends.

Notably, this current Facebook scourge seems different from the CAP-LOCK warnings about?"hidden" sex videos?Facebook users are posting themselves as their Facebook statuses, which we reported as a hoax yesterday.

In that case, the screaming warnings claimed hackers would use a victim's name to post porn videos to the Facebook walls of the victim's Facebook friends. What's more, the warning alleges that these posts remain invisible to the victim.? Several security agencies including Sophos say that they've found no evidence that hackers can are able to prevent you from seeing content they've posted using your name. This particular hoax first surfaced in September and it's possible the resurgence may've been caused by panic over this current alleged rash of nasty spam.

We will continue to update should this story continue to unfold.
