12 Tips: Stay Out of Spam Filters, Run a ... - Small Business Trends

In today?s digital age, an email marketing campaign is necessary to every business model, equivalent to ? if not more important than ? a social media strategy and your company website?s mobile compatibility. It?s an evolved version of direct mailing and cold calling, but despite the many email marketing management options available, the concept still remains an unsuccessful mystery to many small business owners.

no spam

But some entrepreneurs figured out the formula. Their emails collect clicks, replies and forwards, and spark action among potential customers and loyal clients. And they aren?t adding any kind of external expert to their payroll in order to do so.

We asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invitation only nonprofit organization comprised of the country?s most promising young entrepreneurs, the following question to find out what their secrets are regarding email marketing:

?How can business owners create a distinctive email marketing campaign that doesn?t get lost in the inbox clutter??

Here?s what YEC community members had to say:

1. Timing Is Everything!

?We recently rebranded our email newsletter as a nightly ?Study Break? for our female college student audience, timing it to hit inboxes when the need for a fun distraction is at an all-time high. This, along with our strategy of sticking to a specific theme for each day of the week, allows us to establish our emails as a consistent part of our readers? daily routine.? ~ Annie Wang, Her Campus Media

2. Provide Additional Value

?Too many businesses fill their newsletters with nothing but regurgitated blog content and entreaties to buy. Ask yourself how you can use your email campaign to provide added value to your clients, at no extra cost. When they?re shown you have something of value to share, they?ll be more willing to pay for even more.? ~ Steph Auteri,?Word Nerd Pro

3. Keep It Short

?One huge mistake that businesses make is sending long emails full of news that doesn?t interest subscribers. To keep subscribers hooked, it?s crucial to send short emails that only contain interesting content.? ~ Ben Lang, EpicLaunch

4. Ditch the Bells and Whistles

?Consider sending plain text emails to your list ? the kind you would type to a friend, free of graphics and other distractions. Simple text emails are surprisingly effective, as recipients feel you?re writing directly to them rather than blindly firing off a fancy newsletter in their direction. If you personalize the message with a ?Hi, ____? at the beginning, you?ll get even more engagement.? ~ Amanda Aitken, The Girl?s Guide to Web Design

5. Equip With a Strong Headline

?I know it?s simple advice that you probably hear all of the time, but it is really that important. My email campaigns that have strong headlines (i.e. witty, intriguing, straight to the point, or features a celebrity name) have much better end conversion rates.? ~ Lawrence Watkins, Great Black Speakers

6. Is It Mobile-Friendly?

?We?ve found that many of our customers read emails on their smartphones, so fancy images and layouts made the emails unreadable. When we switched to a text-based, mobile-friendly format, we nearly doubled our click-through rate.? ~ Bhavin Parikh, Magoosh, Inc.

7. Be Positive, Practical and Personal

?Focus on being positive, practical and personal. This approach makes your email marketing into something that recipients really value receiving. By taking this approach, I have subscribers regularly sending me thank you emails and even thank you cards for my email marketing.? ~ Elizabeth Saunders, Real Life E?

8. Match the Marketing

?The great thing about email is that you can track nearly every action, and that should tell you what kind of messages to send to your clients and prospects. If someone responds to a certain type of message, segment your list so they get more of those messages. Make sure you segment your prospects from buyers so they get different messaging. It?s all about market-to-message match!? ~ Greg Rollett, The ProductPros

9. Two-Way Street

?Too many newsletters are only updates about your business and the focus is only on you. Share something with them and get personal. Share a cool app you came across that they might benefit from. If you have a blog, then do a post where they can contribute to it and give their input. The more you involve your audience, the more they will want to read every newsletter you send ? and it?s more fun.? ~ Ashley Bodi, Business Beware

10. Write Infrequently!

?Asking a customer to read an email is a more personal ask, and thus has a higher barrier. Also, very few companies have enough interesting news to send a weekly email. For daily and weekly communication, use Facebook and Twitter. If you reserve your newsletter for only big news and send it monthly, you will have more useful things to say and your customer will be more interested in reading.? ~ Aaron Schwartz, Modify Watches

11. Tag Your Subject Line

?One of the easiest ways is to ?tag? your subject line so your readers will start looking out for your message. For example, [underground] [maverick] are ones we use for different lists. Of course, you still have to include some reason for people to read and click, but they have to recognize you first.? ~ Yanik Silver, Maverick1000.com

12. Share Your Story

?Don?t create just another marketing newsletter; your customers already get 3,203 of those. Instead, share your real story with your customers. Write in a personable voice, as if you?re just writing to a really good friend of yours. Be honest and don?t try to sound formal. Make it a narrative that draws your readers in.? ~ Tim Jahn, Entrepreneurs Unpluggd

Government discount lending 'positive' - Commercial Finance Today

The UK government?s National Loan Guarantee Scheme (NLGS) has been hailed as ?very positive for finance? as two major banks? have utilised the programme to provide discounted asset finance deals.?Barclays Asset Finance has used the NLGS to provide a ?2.6m (?3.3m) finance deal to waste management and recycling company, Roydon Group.

Lombard, the asset finance division of the Royal Bank of Scotland, has also used the scheme to provide a ?250,000 facility to specialist glass manufacturer T4 Design.

Under the NLGS, which was launched by Chancellor George Osborne in March, the government will guarantee ?20bn of bank funding to lend to SMEs with a turnover of less than ?50m.

Participating banks can apply for government guarantees, which will allow them to raise funds at a lower cost, so long as they demonstrate they will pass on the benefits through to businesses by reducing the cost of business loans.

Both Barclays and Lombard have opted to pass on the benefit in upfront cash-back equivalent to the loan discount.

Imperative to invest

Wilf Sumner, director at Roydon Group, which is using the finance to purchase a custom-made waste-sorting machine, said: ?The 1% discount through the Barclays cash-back scheme equates to ?30,000 and is going to help us even further by funding some of the additional electrical works needed for the project.?

T4 Design invested the ?250,000 from Lombard in three specialist glass processing machines and in upgrading in the company?s IT infrastructure to handle the increase in capacity.

The deal, arranged by Charlotte Gabb, senior relationship manager with Lombard, included just over ?3,500 in cash-back.

Gabb said: ?The NLGS is one of the most positive things that has happened in the world of finance in a very long time ? it?makes such a difference to customers to be giving them a positive message.

?Most importantly,?it also helps businesses bring their buying plans forward so that they can invest in their growth.

?In order for a business to be innovative, productive and competitive, it is imperative for it to invest in cutting edge equipment.?

The inclusion of asset finance in the NLGS was welcomed by Stephen Sklaroff, director general of the Finance & Leasing Association, when the scheme was announced.

He said: ?This will help to ensure that the NLGS supports investment in plant and machinery and leads to new jobs.

?Around 750,000 small businesses already use equipment finance of this kind and it is very good news that businesses taking advantage of the NLGS discount will be able to choose the most appropriate kind of finance for their needs.?

BlackBerry Curve 9310 / 9320 turns up at FCC, fails to keep a low profile

Image

FCC docs can, from time to time, turn up some welcome device surprises. Not so in this recent RIM filing, as we're treated to yet another in a long line of leaks for the company's Curve 9310 / 9320. The BB OS 7.1 handset, bearing the FCC IDs L6AREY20CW and L6ARFD30CW, has already made several appearances around the globe, preparing for a low-end market berth in Australia, India, Vietnam and the UK. So, aside from RF testing data indicating WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth radios, our familiarity with the phone's specs come from its prior in-the-wild jaunts. Should a single-core processor, 512MB RAM, 3.2-megapixel camera and hardware QWERTY tickle your mobile fancy, then by all means click on the source below to fill your cup of this U.S. pre-release federal formality.

New Churchill War Rooms entrance will reference military hardware, Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore

a photo of a large object being crane lowered into a place behind screens

All under wraps. The Imperial War Museum's new entranceway to the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall.? Courtesy Clash Associates

The entrance to the Churchill War Rooms has for years mirrored its wartime role as a discreet, secret underground location where Winston Churchill and his cabinet conducted the business of war safe from the London Blitz and the terror of Hitler?s flying V bombs.

Now a new bold edifice designed by London-based architects Clash Associates is about to be unveiled that the Imperial War Museum hopes will act as a ?beacon, highlighting the museum?s unique role in the nation?s history.?

The new entrance, made of burnished bronze and Portland stone, promises to complement the listed Whitehall buildings that surround it whilst referencing the bulldog spirit of Churchill, the military hardware of World War Two and the bronze sculptures of Jacob Epstein and Henry Moore.

All will be revealed on May 31 when visitors will be welcomed into the fascinating wartime nerve centre via an equally fascinating new doorway.

Boston beats Philadelphia in Game 7, will face Miami in East final series | NBA

BOSTON ? Guard Rajon Rondo contributed 18 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 85-75 in Game 7 Saturday night to advance to the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals.

The Celtics will open the third round of the playoffs in Miami against the Heat on Monday.

"I've already packed," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "We'll be ready. It's going to be a tough turnaround, but we're not an excuse team. We'll be ready on Monday."

Rondo scored nine straight Boston points, helping the Celtics turn a three-point edge into a double-digit lead after Paul Pierce fouled out with 4:16 left in the game.

Kevin Garnett added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Boston.

Andre Iguodala scored 18 points, and Elton Brand and Jrue Holiday had 15 apiece for the 76ers, who eliminated the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the first round.

Philadelphia center Spencer Hawes, a former Washington Huskies and Seattle Prep player, had four points on 2-for-8 shooting and five rebounds in 17:34.

Ex-Sonic Ray Allen made two fourth-quarter three-pointers for Boston after missing his first five tries from long range. Pierce had 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

Then Rondo took over.

Garnett, Pierce and Allen are known as the Big Three but Sixers coach Doug Collins noted that label seems incomplete for the Celtics these days.

"I don't look at them as the Big Three. I look at them as the Championship Four," Collins said. "Because if you're going to leave Rondo out, you're making a huge mistake."

Rondo, bouncing back from his worst performance of the playoffs in Game 6, scored on a baseline drive and made a long two-point shot (originally scored a three) with 2:47 left. He added a three-pointer with a little more than two minutes left to give Boston a 10-point lead.

Rondo scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

"He really came through," Holiday said. "He put the team on his back."

Collins said, "I thought if we could score 85, we could win. But our inability to score plagued us throughout the season. It looked like the game was getting away from us, but we were right there. I thought turnovers hurt us early in the game."

Miami beat Boston in five games in the conference semifinals last year.

"Last year is in the past," Rondo said. "This year, we're a totally different team. We feel we can beat Miami. We got to this point; there's no doubt in my mind we can. We've got to go down there and take care of business."

In 2010, the Celtics eliminated the Heat in the first round.

Boston took the regular-season series from Miami 3-1, though the last of those meetings was in the final week of the season and came on a night where LeBron James and Dwyane Wade sat out for Miami, while Rondo, Garnett and Allen also were idle.

Diabetes Prevention and Management in your Senior Years

Quite a few people with Medicare are at high risk for developing diabetes these days. Scores of things cause this: your overall health, your weight, and also your current level of fitness, which can decline as we get older. Also, if you?ve got a family medical of diabetes mellitus, you may be at higher risk. Follow some of these common bits of advice to keep in good health and to drastically reduce your personal chances of coming down with this serious health problem during your golden years.

Perhaps you?ve been told this in the past, but living an active lifestyle and working out for just a couple of minutes each day makes a huge effect. While getting in half an hour of aerobic exercise will likely be your aim, do not feel disappointed if some days the best you can fit in is a fast walk around your home. Any activity that steps up your heart-rate for even a short length of time is good for you. Intense activities such as bike riding, elliptical training, yoga classes, floor aerobics, can all help you to keep your body in good shape. For people over 65, there are less stressing exercises too, including swimming or water aerobics. An extra benefit is that you will be able to aim for certain areas to tone, such as your waistline or your leg muscles.

Many people do not understand that aerobic activity doesn?t include just running. Remember that jumping rope or doing jumping jacks or joining in group sports events like softball or racquetball will hike your heart rate into the cardio zone. If you choose a cardiovascular activity that you really like, you should see that you?re more likely to keep it up. Make some time in your calendar for it every day, just like you would schedule any other activity. When first beginning, be sure not to do not much. Build up slowly so that you don?t get over tired and slack off on your new workout program.

Maybe you?ve heard before that muscle consumes many more calories than a pound of fat. Developing muscles will help your body create space to store away glucose, and this means your new exercise routine will automatically help to monitor your blood sugar level when it burns that blood sugar for energy.

It?s been verified that weight-lifting can assist you to manage your diabetes or in some cases avoid diabetes in the first place. Be mindful not to lift too much in the beginning. Weight training might appear simple but in reality there are anatomy principles that figure into it, so be sure to use caution. Consult your provider or a physical trainer to to put together a comprehensive muscle building program that will ensure you work various different areas of your entire body. In case you are not in fabulous health when you first begin your program, work toward easy workout routines that are not to long ? maybe 20 ? 30 minutes in length.

In addition, don?t work the identical muscle groups on back to back days. Your muscles must have adequate time to heal following a tough work-out. As you become stronger, you?ll be able to increase the length of time that you target certain areas, and also how often you work that particular muscle group into your weekly weight-lifting routine.

Then, do not forget about fiber! A diet that is heavy in fiber is effective in preventing not just diabetes, but also many other health problems too. The easiest way to find fiber is in veggies and your personal favorite fruits. Quite a few cereals are chock full of fiber. In case you feel you are not absorbing enough, you can get some fiber supplements, which come in dissolving powder, pills and even fiber bars that you can eat. Fiber is so important because it assists in the digestion of food, which gives you more energy during the day. Weight control becomes easier when you are eating a fiber-rich diet.

Also, a significant aspect of diabetes management is regulating your insulin levels. Medigap policies offer terrific coverage for medical technology like blood glucose monitors and testing strips to monitor your glucose. However, consuming whole-grain foods will also automatically help you in tracking glucose. Keep your eye out for options to ordinary bread and similar bakery staples when looking for whole-grain products. In most cases, whole grain foods have a rich brown shade and will often state that this product is high in whole grains.

Begin by trading out your everyday white bread for a whole-grain wheat bread. As you are choosing breakfast cereals, search for brands that advertise high fiber, and look for the fiber count on the nutrition info column. Whenever you beef up the total amount of fiber within the baked goods sitting in your pantry, you help not only you personally, but also your family members as well.

Watch your weight on a routine schedule. Get into the habit of weighing in every week, in order to track your progress. To avoid gaining extra pounds, work out regularly, start eating a better group of food items, and snack on fruits and veggies rather than candy or salty snacks. One tip is to get a smaller plate for your meal. You should be able to avoid overeating by filling up a smaller plate as opposed to the over-large plates so commonly used these days.

Should you need help to stay on track, get assistance. Join a gym with a pal in your area who might enjoy many of the same types of exercise. Locate a dietitian to help you in controlling your daily calorie intake, and enlist a fitness trainer to encourage you in your weekly fitness activities. Keeping a healthy weight is a terrific method to avoid many medical problems, including diabetes. In the event that you do develop diabetes, you will see that it?s so much easier to control it if you?re not lugging around a bunch of extra weight.

By making each of these things into a habit, you will help your loved ones to make these changes along with you. Having support from your friends and relatives in these endeavors is a terrific way to help avoid the onset of diabetes as well as several other medical issues during your golden years, when you should be making the most from your life.

Tropical Storm Beryl threatened to snarl traffic on Memorial Day as it brought drenching rain, winds and the possibility of flooding to the southeastern U.S. coast.

The storm made landfall in Florida early Monday near Jacksonville Beach around 12:10 a.m. with near-hurricane-strength winds of 70 mph (113 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The weather system was expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday. It was forecast to weaken as it moves inland Monday and Tuesday, and as a frontal system comes down from the Great Lakes, Beryl was expected to move out into the Atlantic Ocean.

"We're seeing about the best that Beryl has right now as far as its winds are concerned, with winds about 70 mph," forecaster Al Sandrik said in an audio briefing late Sunday. "The model shows significant weakening of the storm in 12 hours."

But the weather system could complicate holiday traffic Monday after wrecking some Memorial Day weekend plans Sunday. It caused shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and led to the cancellation of some events.

A tropical storm warning was in effect early Monday for coastal areas from Flagler Beach, Fla. to the Savannah River in Georgia. An earlier tropical storm warning for areas northward to Edisto Beach, S.C., was discontinued. At 5 a.m., the storm was 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Jacksonville, Fla. and was moving west near 8 mph (13 kph). The storm's maximum sustained winds had decreased to near 50 mph (85 kph). Tropical storm force winds were extending outward up to 140 miles (220 kilometers).

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement Sunday evening.

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast Sunday.

In Georgia, at Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said crews in Charleston Harbor rescued three people and a dog from a sinking recreational vessel late Sunday morning.

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall on Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

All-new Peugeot 301 revealed, coming to India in 2013

French car manufacturer, Peugeot, which seems to be all set to start its India innings all over again, recently released some details and the first official photographs of the new 301 saloon which has been engineered for emerging markets like India.

?The new Peugeot 301 is a clear illustration of the marque's desire to conquer new markets. The car has been specifically designed to appeal to a wide customer base attracted by four-door saloons which are both accessible and present an enhanced level of status,? says a press release from Peugeot, and the bit about four-door saloons and ?enhanced level of status? is a dead giveaway of their intent to launch the car in India as soon as possible.

According to Peugeot, the new 301 has been engineered to adapt to extreme hot and cold weather conditions as well as poor roads and boasts of ?class leading? space for rear seat passengers. The chassis and suspension have been optimized for ride comfort and the car will be available with safety features like ABS, ESP and up to four airbags.

Engine options on the new Peugeot 301 include 71bhp 1.2-litre and 115bhp 1.6-litre petrol engines, and a 92bhp 1.6-litre diesel. Both manual and automatic transmissions will be available. The car will make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September this year, and will first be launched in Turkey, followed by Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, The Middle East, Gulf and African States and parts of South America. We?re also sure the Peugeot 301 will make its way to India by mid- to end-2013 and is likely to be priced at around Rs 8-9 lakh.

(AP) ? Ryder Hesjedal became the first Canadian to win one of cycling's three major tour races, capturing the Giro d'Italia on Sunday by overtaking Spain's Joaquin Rodriguez in the final stage.

Hesjedal started the 21st stage 31 seconds behind the leader, but finished 16 seconds ahead of Rodriguez in the overall standings. He completed the 17.5-mile individual time trial in 34 minutes, 15 seconds. That was good for sixth place ? 20 spots ahead of Rodriguez in the 95th edition of the race.

"It's just been an unreal experience from Day One, what the team was able to do. It's unbelievable," said Hesjedal, whose total race time was 91 hours, 39 minutes, 2 seconds. "This is incredible. It's a dream come true."

He is only the third non-Italian to win the Giro in the past 15 years.

"I couldn't have done it without the team," he said. "I knew I was good when I came into the race. I stayed focused and took every opportunity. The support, the fans at home, it's all unreal. I'd like to thank everyone."

Like the rest of the riders, Hesjedal had been through a demanding mountain ride to the top of the Stelvio Pass in northern Italy on Saturday.

"Yesterday was extremely hard," he said. "I got through it and I knew as I was on the helicopter descending into Milan that I still had a shot. This morning I just felt incredible on my bike and I knew I could do it."

Though he hadn't taken his victory chances seriously before the race, Hesjedal's thinking started to change after he first wore the pink jersey on Stage 7, following a fifth-place finish.

"I never thought I'm going to win," he said. "I was always just focused on having a good ride and I knew that would put me up there. The day I pulled on the jersey for the first time I knew I was good and could accomplish something great and that drove me harder."

It is the first major victory for Hesjedal, whose sixth place in the 2010 Tour de France was the highest Canadian finish in the race in 22 years.

"It can only be a good thing for the sport in Canada and I'm proud of that," the Garmin rider said. "Just the other day someone went into a store in Canada and asked where they could get a pink Garmin jersey...so it still has a way to go!"

Hesjedal and Rodriguez were the last two riders to start. Rodriguez, who had worn the pink jersey for 10 days over the course of the race, ended the stage in 35:02.

"It's only now, with hindsight, that you see the mistakes," said Rodriguez, who rides for Katusha. "Maybe we should have distanced Ryder in the first week. But it went how it went and Ryder won. He was the strongest in the three weeks. I did my best and I don't have any regrets."

Marco Pinotti won the final stage in 33:06, 39 seconds ahead of Britain's Geraint Thomas. It is the sixth stage victory for an Italian rider in this year's Giro, beating the country's 1974 record of five.

"This was a big goal for me," Pinotti said. "I won the last time trial here at the Giro in 2008 and I was second in 2010 and last year it was a big goal. But I crashed two days before and had to go to the hospital. So I've been working for this for a year. For me, it's been a difficult Giro."

Thomas De Gendt, who rode to a memorable solo win Saturday, put in another good performance to finish third overall, 1:39 behind Hesjedal. The Belgian had been 5:40 behind Rodriguez at the start of Stage 20.

Defending champion Michele Scarponi was fourth. It is the first time since 1995 that an Italian has not finished on the podium in the Giro, one of the sport's top three races with the Tour de France and the Spanish Vuelta. Two-time Giro winner Ivan Basso was fifth, 3:44 off the pace.

Taylor Phinney, who won the opening time trial in Denmark, took a wrong turn during the last stage and was forced to turn around. He finished the stage in 16th place in 34:37.

The final stage was shortened by about a mile because of road work.

Plug-in solar panels: Worth the cost?

At this stage, plug-in solar panels are so early in their development that their quality and effectiveness are questionable. But the idea has potential.

By Russ Finley,?Guest blogger / May 26, 2012

People gather in front of a bank of solar panels on May 18, 2012, in East Montpelier, Vt. Small, plug-in solar panels are now available for purchase. Finley argues that such products don't make a lot of financial sense in their current forms, but the idea of portable solar is a promising one.

An article over on CNET titled "Got a deck? Solar panels now a plug-in appliance," suggests that you can buy from Amazon.com a 1,000 watt solar panel system that plugs into your wall outlet for only $1,099. I thought they were really on to something until I read the comments:

This article was written very poorly. At first read, it would appear that the 1,000 watt system costs $1,099.95, but going over to Amazon, that is just the price of one panel whose rating is 240 watts.

At about $4.58/watt, these panels will not produce electricity to pay for the finance charges alone. You will not be able to recover your investment on this, as the panels deteriorate through time.

If the 1,000 watt system costs $1,099.95, it would truly be disruptive as it will be feasible. But no, this solar PV will not cut it, still too expensive. If they can just sell these to about $2/watt, then it would be very worthwhile, given that you will mount these yourself.

On the other hand, I think this concept has potential (no pun intended). I bought a cheap solar inverter last year similar to the one in the above article just to experiment with. You connect one end to a solar panel and plug the other end into a wall outlet. The device converts your solar panel?s low voltage direct current into high voltage alternating current. Because the voltage (electric potential) from the inverter creates an electric version of back pressure against the voltage from the power company, it will reduce the amount of power coming into your house from the power line, which will slow down your electric meter, reducing your electric bill.

Modern homes tend to have significant phantom loads (appliances that draw a small amount of current even when you turn them off or when not in use): computers on standby, DVRs, televisions, motion sensors, the clock in your microwave and stove, tuners, routers, furnace, thermostat, chargers, and on and on.

Not many people have a thousand watts of phantom load so purchasing a thousand watt system would be a waste unless you plan to run things like the dishwasher, and clothes dryer etc. in sequence the whole time the sun is shining.

These inverters are intended to supplement your house power grid, not to spin your electric meter backwards. They will not send power (Volts times Amps) to your house wiring if there is no voltage coming to your house from the power company. This is to protect electricians who may be working on wiring inside or outside your house when the power is off. They of course, also won?t reduce phantom loads when the sun isn?t shining.
?The inverter I purchased off Amazon cost about $100. It isn?t UL listed so I wouldn?t want to place it anywhere that might start a fire if it blew up. The one mentioned in the above article is, in theory, UL listed. I was testing one out just last week in my drive way. I had it plugged into a Kill-A-Watt to see how much power it was supplying for a given solar panel angle. A neighbor walking by asked how much it was producing. When I said ?About 35 watts,? he suggested it would never pay for itself, and he was right. But then again, when did granite counter tops ever pay for themselves, or produce any power for that matter? A system like this could be viewed as a high-end appliance to reduce phantom loads.

I?m not recommending that people run out and purchase these because they are of questionable quality at this stage of their development, and I?m also not sure of their legality. I can envision a day when systems like this that cost less than a $ 1,000 might be (as insulation and double pane windows already are) required by building codes in sunny climates to reduce the impact of the significant and growing phantom loads. And who knows, if the price gets low enough, builders and home owners may start installing them to show off to neighbor.

Gary Shilling On Copper, Oil And China - Business Insider

There are two commodities that are watched particularly closely for their abilities to predict the direction of the global economy: copper and oil.

Economist Gary Shilling is bearish on both.

Shilling recently invited Business Insider to his home where he explained to us, among other things, why copper is a more reliable economic indicator than oil.

In this segment, he explains.? He also explains why he thinks China's economy is headed toward a hard landing.
